Si conoces la sensacional serie de animación basada en los cómics del Hombre Murciélago, ‘Las aventuras de Batman’, no hay mucho más que decir sobre ‘Batman – La máscara del fantasma’, una película de vital importancia en la trayectoria del héroe. La puedes recuperar, después de años desaparecida del mercado español (en Estados Unidos se pudo ver con más facilidad en, entre otros sitios, la difunta plataforma DC Universe), en HBO Max.
Si no la conoces, tienes ante ti una de las mejores versiones del personaje: estéticamente conserva toda la elegancia de los mejores cómics, sin perder de vista la perspectiva estilizada e imposible que Batman atesora desde la primera mitad de siglo. Pero además, con una historia y una animación aún más sofisticadas que las de la serie original (esta película se rodó entre la primera y segunda temporadas). Fue la primera película de la división de animación de Warner y es la única de este tipo del Universo DC que ha llegado a cines.
Basándose remotamente en el cómic ‘Batman: Año dos’ de Mike W. Barr, aunque también coge elementos del legendario ‘Año uno’, la película nos presenta a un villano de apariencia fantasmal que está ejecutando a importantes figuras del crimen organizado, ejecuciones que se le adjudican erróneamente a Batman. Coincide con el regreso a Gotham de un antiguo amor de Bruce Wayne, lo que le retrotrae a su trágica génesis.
‘La máscara del fantasma’ tiene una aproximación asombrosamente compleja al héroe para durar menos de 80 minutos, y la consigue con mucho más acierto que películas de imagen real más ambiciosas. Aquí la figura trágica, que no puede escapar de la desventura, está presente en todo momento, y hace un retrato muy preciso del primer Batman: agresivo, violento e incluso a veces caricaturesco. Una adición imprescindible a la mitología del héroe.
